How To Solve Multi-Digit Multiplication Equations

Today we had to make a poster explaining how to solve multi-digit multiplication equations. I collaborated with Ella and Kylah. You have to break down the equation so it's easier. For example, 86x5 you would first do 80 x 5 then 6 x 5 and then you would get the final answer.

Blog Activity- Makey Makey

Buy the Makey Makey STEM Pack Classroom Invention Literacy Kit ...
What do you already know about Makey Makey?

I'm not really exactly sure what Makey Makey is, but I think it has to do with something that includes coding.

What are you most excited about learning with coding or robotics?

I am most excited about coding because it has a lot of uses. You use coding to program robots or you use coding to make a video game.

Do you thing this will be an easy or hard task? Why?

I think it will be both, some part may be easy will some will be hard. Somethings people might find easy and other might find hard.

Is There Life on Other Planets

WALT: Think critically about texts with developing confidence
AC and EM Is there life on other planets by Arie Cowan

We had to make a presentation explaining why or why not we think there's life on other planets. I chose to work collaborative with Eva. We used 2 articles 1 was Exoplanets NASA and the other one was Is There Life On Other Planets. I thought it was quite difficult to find information. My favourite part was making the presentation space-like.

Do you think there's life on other planets?

Saturn and Neptune

WALT: Create a presentation about 2 planets

Today we had to make a presentation about 2 planets. I chose to do it collaborative Ella and Eva. We chose Saturn and Neptune. We had to find an article and write in our own words facts about those planets. Ella found information about Saturn and me and Eva found information about Saturn.

The most interesting fact I found about Neptune was it takes 165 earth years for Neptune to orbit the sun.

Summary of Galileo Galilei

WALT: Create a summary of Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei by Ella, Eva and Arie
Today we had to create a poster summarising Galileo Galilei. He was an astronomer and discovered that all the planets revolve around the sun rather than the Earth which people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. He published an article explaining what he discovered and the Catholic Church (who strongly believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe believed that anyone who didn't believe in what they believed needed to be punished.

Design A Telescope

WALT: Make A Telescope
For reading we had to design a telescope. I worked with Eva, Ella and Kylah. My favourite part was designing the telescope and it was also the hardest part. We used google drawing to create them. For the first one we got a picture of a telescope off the internet and traced around it. For the second one we used shapes and tried to make it 3D.

What medium would you use?

Something Alive

WALT: Create a Blog Post that Explains Our Learning

"Something Alive" Is a graphic novel written by Jem Yoshioka. A girl was born in New Zealand along with her parents, but her grandmother was born in Japan and travelled to New Zealand. Her features are unclear and misleading, but her accent blends smoothly when everyone else is  talking. Her dad however has no choice he looks exactly like his grandfather. She feels misread. And feels lost in Japan and New Zealand. People like to tell her things about Japan, and others like to ask questions about Japan. She dislikes being told things she already knows and hates to be reminded that she doesn't know a lot about her culture. But when she feels lost she has her family and most of all her grandmother, she tells her to learn more about Japan. Her grandmother is proud of her culture and her life here. She says that heritage is a living part of all of us, a thing to pursue.

Poland Research

We read a book called "The Refugee Polish Children". And because the main country they come from is Poland we did a research of Poland and research about their flag, currency, population etc. I didn't know a lot of Poland so it was interesting to learn about there culture. When we do a country research I especially enjoy learning about there wildlife. I would like to try Pierogi which are Polish dumplings and I've tried Goulash before and it's really nice. I would like to visit Poland one day.

Close To The Edge

WALT: Visualise and summarise the text in our own words

Close to the edge is a short novel by Cecile Krueger. A teenage girl called Opal and her mother are refugees, and are trying to find a new home. They have been walking for days and all they can taste is dust. Opal and most likely all the refugees are tired and thirsty. Opal puts her hand up to the rock while she was walking her hand slipped over a crack in the rock. It seemed big enough for her to climb through. One of the refugees we're too close to the edge, dropping small bits of rocks and sand. Which made everyone but her distracted. She climbed through, She was in a dim-lighted cave. She felt something wet and she then knew what it was.

My Name is Rez Summarise

WALT: Visualise and summarise the text in our own words.

“My name is Rez” Is a graphic novel told by Toby Morris. Rez and her family live in a camp in Iran. It was crowded with refugees who seeked shelter. There were many diseases which made children sick. Rez’s parents told them they were being resettled in New Zealand. A couple of months later they moved to Auckland. Rez didn’t speak or understand English but in camp she learnt one sentence which was “My name is Rez”. Children made fun of her for sounding like a robot. But now that she’s an adult she now fully understands and speaks English. She is a lawyer and a Youth Adviser for the Red Cross.

Spanish Translations

Isabel speaks Spanish since her home town is Cuba. We had to do some Spanish translations like senor, abuelita and son cubano. I had to do a bit of research for most of the words mostly manana and son cubano. I didn't really know much of Spanish.

Do you know that much Spanish?

Syrian Pound To New Zealand Dollars

We had to make a poster or slide which shows Syrian Pounds being converted to New Zealand Dollars. I had to do a bit of researching to find out what the amount of money is in Syrian currency. I decided to use google slides as I though it would be more easier to use instead of using google docs or google drawing or even canva.

What do you think would be cheaper New Zealand Currency or Syrian Pounds?

Boat Design

We had to make a boat design that would make it from Cuba to America like the Cuban rafts and use recyclable materials. Most of the rafts used oil drums and bamboo poles and anything else they could find so they could escape Cuba. I decided to use:

  • Bamboo Poles
  • Large Oil Drums
  •  2 Wooden Planks
  • Rope
I would use the bamboo poles for support for the wooden planks. The large oil drums to float. The wooden planks, 1 for shelter from rain and the other to sit on and the rope to hold everything together.

Character Art: Isabel

For reading we did character art, which is my favourite activity for reading so far. I drew Isabel from Cuba and used the book for her description. I had fun drawing this but it was quite hard because I don't normally draw like this because my style of drawing is normally more cartoony than this but it was fun and challenging to draw this.

Compare and Contrast

I made a Venn diagram explaining what was going on in those times shown above. I did Germany (1930), Cuba (1994) and Syria in 2015. I had to research a lot on different sites and it took me a while, but I enjoyed researching about what happened in those different countries at those different times. They all had a lot going on and I wouldn't want to be there in those times.

Historic Person Research

I read another chapter of Refugee and Isabel and the capital city of Cuba, Havana has gone crazy. Someone fired a pistol and everyone started to rush out of the side streets. They yelled and threw bottles and rocks. They were chanting "Castro Out!" Some people were trying to get away from the chaos but more people flooded in. People went in to a general goods store and women and men were stealing everything they could lay their hands on. The police were outraged and amongst those people her father was there in the chaos. The police were arresting the rioters and hitting them with wooden batons. Isabel's father picked up a bottle and threw it at the police and smashed against the seawall. One of the police officers grabbed his arm and balled him to the ground being beat up with a nightstick. Isabel ran to her father and before the officer can hit him again. The officer was surprised but then again angry. He raised his arm to hit Isabel, but then the other police spoke "What do you think you're doing?" And then the police were being summoned somewhere else. But then the police spoke to him saying if he finds him again he'll be arrested. She understood her father will have to leave tonight.

I then had to make a presentation of the 3 dictators of each of there countries and research 4 facts about each of them.

How To Subtract Using a Vertical Algorithm

For Maths today we had to make a poster explaining how to subtract while using a vertical algorithm. I think using a vertical algorithm is the easiest way to subtract as the numbers are lined up in ones, tens, hundreds and again so on. It is easier because you can see the numbers lined up and just need to subtract 6-0 or something like that in the column.

Pack Your Suitcase

Today I read chapter 4 of Refugee, where Josef and his mother and sister get on the train to Cuba. And so we have already read about the children and their life.

And so we had to imagine we had to leave our country today and make or draw a suitcase with the things we need/want to bring with us the things I would bring along with me are:

My Dog Cassius: I would bring Cassius because he's loyal, protective and playful and he makes me happy and would help me get through hard times as a refugee and he likes running around, and doesn't mind travelling on foot.

My Cat Sid: I would bring Sid with me as he likes roaming around and after a while gets used to the wildlife and can hunt. Another reason I would bring him is because he likes to lie on my lap and sleep and also makes me happy.

Clothes: Are definitely some of the essential things I would bring as you never know what the weather will be like and so you need to bring a variety of clothes like jumpers and jackets and T-shirts and shorts.

Shoes: I would bring sturdy and strong shoes as a lot of the time you'll be travelling in foot  like jumping and running and sometimes you'll need shoes because there are prickles, shattered glass and thorns on the track or wherever your travelling.

Water: You will definitely need water because you never know when you'll find water again and so always carry a lot of water especially if there's more than just you.

Phone Charger & Phone: I would carry my phone and phone charger just in case I'm in an emergency where I need to call the police or an ambulance or my family.  And I would need my phone charger to recharge my phone.

Sketch Book: I would bring a sketch book because 1 of my passions is drawing and I like to draw in my free time or when I'm bored and so I would bring a sketch book to draw on.

LED Pencils: I would bring quite a few LED pencils because If I didn't what would I use to draw with and I don't really colour my drawings so I just need LED pencils.

Headphones: I would bring my headphones because I like listening to music and YouTube when I draw or just whenever so I would carry them with me so I can listen to music or YouTube without people also be able to hear the music I chose or YouTube too.

Cap: I would bring some-sort of hat that protects my head from the sun as in some places the weather can be really hot and humid. And I would need some-sort of protection from the sun in general.

Sunscreen: I would definitely bring sunscreen so I don't get sunburn and have more protection from the sun I would definitely bring it to very hot places like some places in Australia.

Wallet & Money: I would need money just in case I run out of essential needs like food (For me and my 2 pets), Hygiene Essentials (Toothbrush and Toothpaste.)  and clothing. I would need money in that country's currency to buy those. And I would need a wallet to keep money in there without falling out.

Toiletry Bag: I would keep a toiletry bag so I can keep all the hygiene essentials like toothpaste, toothbrush and other stuff like that. I would keep them all in there because it is much easier than keeping them in your suitcase and is lasts much longer than a plastic bag.

Country Study: Syria

Today I have read another chapter of Refugee and I have read about the third and last child of the story called Mahmoud and at the moment in Syria they are expecting a jet missile or a rocket launcher which made him paranoid and so he always wore a hood over his face so he won't get recognised he wanted to be invisible and he doesn't have any friends or doesn't answer any of the questions in class even when he is directly told to answer them. He has a younger brother that doesn't show any emotion Mahmoud hasn't seen him cry or laugh lately either. While they were walking from school he sees a boy he doesn't know who was holding bread getting bullied by 2 other boys. He was thinking about helping him but then he took his brother by the hand and found a different route home.

We had to make a presentation of Syria, Syria has very delicious looking food and interesting wildlife.

Country Study: Cuba

At the moment we're reading a novel called Refugee and I'm up to the 2nd chapter which explains the backstory of the 2nd kid called Isabel and she is from Cuba which is a very colourful country but at the moment the Cuba is struggling with food and anyone who tries to escape from Cuba is thrown into Jail. And people from Cuba if they find an animal they will eat it, and Isabel found a small, scrawny calico cat and is trying to feed it and making sure no one will kill it. And she is very talented with playing the trumpet and plays it for tourists from Mexico, Europe and Canada to try and get some pesos.

And so we had to to a country study of Cuba, I especially liked this one because I have never heard of Cuba and Cuba is a very colourful country and they have interesting food and wildlife.

The Difference Between Digits and Numbers

Last term we have been focusing on adding and subtracting large numbers, and using place value to help solve the equations. I think it is important we know the difference between digits and numbers so that we can recognise the digits and find out the value depending on the place.

Country Study: Germany

This term we are reading a novel called Refugee, it's about 3 kids from different countries and backgrounds are all trying to find refuge and are about face dangers that no one can compare to. Today I have read about a 12 year old Jewish boy from Germany called Josef. Adolf Hitler's Storm Troopers barged into there flat and took Josef's dad to concentration camp. And after 6 months they got a telegram from their dad saying that he is out of concentration camp, one 1 condition they leave the country within 14 days.

We then had to do a country study of Germany including it's population, currency, cuisine and where it is located. I had much fun with it as I like researching and finding information about different countries and stuff like that.

Maori Gods

WALT: Create a quality blog post for an online audience, using correct sentence punctuation

We have been learning about Maori gods and we decided on what they mostly behave like is what the emotion was. There were 6 gods we learnt about.

[Yellow]
Rongo-Ma-Tane- [is happiness and peacefulness] Rongo-Ma-Tane is the god of peace and cultivated food.

[Orange]
Maui- [is cheeky or hoha]

[Purple]
Ruaumoko- [is annoyed or frustrated] Ruaumoko is the god of volcanoes.

[Red]
Tumatauenga- [is furious/fuming] Tumatauenga is the god of war.

[Light Blue]
Tawhirimatea- [Has no control and is lost] Tawhirimatea is the god of weather.

[Dark Blue]
Tangaroa- [Do-over or start again] Tangaroa is the god of the sea.

Miss fleet lined the Maori gods in that exact order and asked us a question like how do you feel about art or sports and other things like that. And what god we lined up behind was what we felt like about that sort of thing.

What Is Respect?

WALT: To make a quality blog post for an online audience

Respect is something we use everyday. Respect is showing manners in a dignified sort of way. Respect is in a conversation showing that your engaged in the conversation by making eye contact and facing your whole body to them instead of facing your back to the speaker. And as for language when someone is doing something annoying or irritating you don't have to yell at them, even at times this can be really hard but you still have to show determination and perseverance to talk to them politely and tell them to stop. You should show respect to everyone everywhere you go, like in a classroom environment you would show respect to your peers and your teachers and even at home you should be showing respect to your parents or who you live with and your siblings (If you have some). Respect is something that will probably help you in life, as if you be disrespectful to everyone then probably they'll be disrespectful back, but if you try to be respectful to everyone then they will probably repay it back to you.

First Day At Tech Recount

WALT: Use correct sentence punctuation in our blog posts and comments.

On our first day of tech we took a bus ride to Kataia Intermediate, all the year 8's went to cooking class and the year 7's got split up. Half of them went to wood-work and the rest went to technology. I was one of those of those people who went to technology and our teacher was Mr. Russel we were going to make this specific type of block where you can put your pencils in because the holes where pencil-shaped. And there's also a gap where you can fit your phone in because the gap is specifically designed for your phone but we haven't finished.

Book Review: The Titans Curse

Lately, I’ve been reading a book called ‘The Titans Curse’ my friend recommended me to read it. So far, Percy, Annabeth and Thalia have been dropped off at a boarding school. A centaur called Grover has found 2 half-bloods in the school, a brother and a sister. He also has found a monster which turns out to be the vice-principal, Dr Thorn. A half-blood is half-mortal, half-god, finding 1 half-blood is very rare so finding 2 or more is extremely rare.

Team Building 3

WALT: To work together as a team

On Wednesday we did our 3rd team building challenge and In my opinion, this one was the hardest. We had a bunch of water balloons and the task was to throw it to each member of the team in a circle, but we had to take a step back each time someone caught it. In my team was Ella, Eva, Aneika, Lyric and me. We weren't very successful as we dropped the balloon heaps of times, but I thought it was fun and funny when we dropped the balloon.

Team Building 2

WALT: To work together as a team

Yesterday on Tuesday we did another team-building activity in groups of 4 or 5. This task was to make the tallest and strongest tower of marshmallows and skewers. We only had 20 minutes to make the tower. In the team I was in there was Ella, Eva, Manaia, Imogen and me. We decided to do a cube tower but it fell apart, so we tried a different approach and because it kept falling apart so it ended up looking like a really weird shape. But when the timer hit 1 everyone's tower either collapsed or wasn't finished ours only collapsed a little and so we won.

Team Building

WALT: Work together as a team

Reflection: Yesterday we had to do a task in a team, to show that we can actually finish that task by working in a team. There were 5 stacks of cups. Each stack of cups had twenty in them. The task was to make a 20 cup tower but we couldn't use any of our body parts. The only materials we could use were a long piece of string and a rubber band. And we only had 10 minutes to make it. In the next round, we needed to make the longest 20 cup tower and in the final round a 6-storey tower.
